Flange Bearing Units and Linear Motion Parts: Selection and Sourcing

Bearing units and linear motion components are the parts that quietly determine whether a machine runs smoothly or vibrates itself apart. They are also among the most cross-referenceable items in the plant, which makes them easy to source — provided the dimensional and sealing details are right.

Bearing units

• Flanged units — two-, three- and four-bolt flanges (oval, square and round), mounted where the bearing must sit flat against a face.
• Pillow blocks — for shaft support along a frame or conveyor.
• Take-up units — for tensioning belt and chain drives.
• Insert bearings — the replaceable inner unit, usually with a grub-screw or eccentric locking collar.

Linear motion parts

• Linear ball bearings — closed, open and adjustable types running on hardened shafting.
• Shaft support rails — the rail-and-bearing assemblies used on lighter axes.
• Ball screws and linear guides — for positioning axes requiring accuracy and stiffness.
• Shafting and supports — hardened and ground shaft, with end supports matched to the bearing.

Selection criteria

• Shaft diameter and mounting dimensions — bolt-hole spacing must match, not just the bore.
• Load and speed — radial and axial capacity, and the resulting service life.
• Sealing — the standard seal may not survive washdown or abrasive dust; specify the sealed or stainless variant.
• Housing material — cast iron for strength, pressed steel for light duty, stainless or thermoplastic for washdown and food areas.
• Lubrication and relubrication — some units are sealed for life, others need a grease point.

Sourcing tips

Give the complete unit reference with any suffix that indicates sealing or material. Where the reference is obsolete, supply the shaft diameter, bolt-hole centres and housing type — these three dimensions identify an equivalent in almost every case.
